Bird Box Bonanza

This week I started work on a fantastic new project designing sculptural bird boxes in collaboration with pupils at ten Kirklees schools (inspired by this project). So far I have had the pleasure of working with 88 children and three teachers, working through a variety of ideas and approaches in the creating of wildlife themed characters which will form the basis of the Bird Box designs. The boxes will be exhibited as part of this years Festival of Light in Huddersfield - watch this space for further updates…

Ancient Waters - Holmfirth Arts Festival

I had a fantastic night a couple of weeks ago performing a commissioned piece 'Anicient Waters' as part of Holmfirth Arts Festival in collaboration with Arun Ghosh and his band, and my partner in crime Benjamin Rabe (collectively we are Bunny and the Beardman).

Le Tour Passes Through Holmfirth

Great to see Le Tour de France pass through Yorkshire and in particular Holmfirth on Sunday. Here are a few images of the Plant-Life-Cycle installation on the windows of the market hall, this one with the cyclists passing through shows me and the Cycle-Shed in the background. Images Jonty Wilde.

Projecting on the Cycle Shed

The Cycle Shed became the canvas on Saturday as I projected digital paintings directly on to its surface, and even managed to make a live animated projection piece inspired by the birdsong of Dewsbury Country Park. Much fun!! Photos by Yvonne Roberts.

Uplifting Email About Reconnecting with Drawing

Chatting with the Fauna Drawing Workshop
Drawing I developed in collaboration with Jonathan Grauel, based on work made by workshop participants.

I recently delivered a series of drawing focused workshops as part my 'Chatting with the Fauna' exhibition at the Creative Arts Hub in Mirfield. The workshops engaged with almost 400 primary school pupils and their teachers over a 5 day period, and the children's work then formed part of the continuing exhibition.

As usual I got on my soap box and talked enthusiastically about the importance of drawing as a communication tool.

I received an email this morning from one of the teachers who attended the workshops;

Hi,

I came with my class from School last term to do some art with you for the exhibition in Mirfield. I know the kids really enjoyed it but I was actually really inspired by your work and your approach. You told the kids to never give up drawing as that's what happens to people in their teens. That was pretty much me, but after that day I went and bought a sketch pad and some felt tips and started drawing again. So much so I've started using acrylics, oil pastels, watercolours and crayons and got myself a shed to do it all in.

So I'd just like to say thanks for the inspiration. It gave me the push to do the picture books I've wanted to do for a while.

Thanks again

Sonny

This email filled me will a warm glow :) I wish Sonny the best of luck with his drawing journey.

Everyone should draw more!!!

Cycle Shed - Plant Life Cycle Residency

Yesterday saw my first on-site session at Dewsbury Country Park with the 'Cycle Shed' as part of the Plant Life Cycle project. I am one of three artists in residence commissioned as part of the project to create 'cycle' themed work in response to Dewsbury Counrty Park. I had a wonderful time and started on three new drawings which will inform further work, and hopefully an animated response to the park.
